Royal Palace of Gödöllő

One of the largest Baroque palaces in Hungary, the Royal Palace of Gödöllő represents an outstanding national treasure from both historical and architectural perspectives. Constantly developing, it is a scene which serves cultural, tourism and protocol functions alike while offering family-friendly services, too.

It was built by Antal Grassalkovich I, one of the most distinguished Hungarian noblemen of the 18th century and minister of the crown office for Queen Maria Theresa. With the completion of the building, a new style in Hungarian palace architecture was born. In the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the palace was one of the favourite retreats of Queen Elisabeth (“Sisi”). After the Second World War, it was used as both a barracks for Soviet troops and as a nursing home – both of which occupations slowly led to structural decay. Renewal of the building commenced at the beginning of the 1990s and since 1996 the palace has been open to receiving visitors from all around the world. Photo © Royal Palace of Gödöllő

The various periods of the palace’s history are presented by a permanent exhibition in the museum (including the Baroque era and the Royal Family at Gödöllő, while the Gisela Wing follows events at the palace right up to present day). The Baroque Theatre and the pavilion on Royal Hill have also been renovated.

In the recent past, the Royal Palace has been enhanced by the addition of a host of new attractions (the palace gardens have been renewed; the Elisabeth Veranda has been rebuilt; the Horthy Bunker can be visited; construction of the riding hall and stables has been completed; 3D projections can be enjoyed; and there is also a new permanent exhibition: ‘The Equestrian Culture of the Royal Court and the Nobility’). We offer a number of educational activities to enrich the learning experience in the museum.
Besides the historical traditions and the faithfully refurbished rooms which satisfy the most scrupulous demands of protocol, the programme of colourful cultural events on offer makes the Royal Palace of Gödöllő one of the most inviting and exciting institutions and tourist destinations in Hungary today. Photo © Royal Palace of Gödöllő
